• Parents and communities must focus on the real issues affecting our children's health… The parental instinct to protect our children is a precious and community-strengthening commodity. Parents and others responsible for the health and safety of children should be constantly vigilant. But, when it comes to matters of science, be wary of hype, error and incomplete information.

• While our mission is complex and challenging, the rewards are many. We are doctors, social workers, advisors, mentors and friends. But above all the people of PEP are merchants of health and hope.

• Our government seems at war with itself on the issue of affirmative action. On one hand, the administration is fighting against programs aimed at increasing educational opportunities for minority applicants. On the other, our Department of Defense uses similar programs to help ensure our national security.

Former Pentagon chiefs and war heroes stated explicitly in their brief that "the military cannot achieve an officer corps that is both highly qualified and racially diverse unless the service academies and the ROTC use limited race-conscious recruiting and admissions policies." Surely, this is wisdom that applies to broader America society.

• Our society has been vastly enriched by technology. From marketing to medicine, commerce to communication, and education to entertainment, we are witnesses to a revolution of discovery fueled by technological innovation. The potential is virtually incalculable.

• The hue of our politics should not dictate the color of our reason and our ideology should not limit our imagination. And regardless of the nature of our God, let us find the God in our nature. Have a hopeful New Year.
